Clark University’s student chapter of the anti-poverty organization, ONE, will be celebrating World AIDS Day with several events this week, including a World AIDS Day celebration they hope will attract hundreds of students and members of the campus community.
Clark currently ranks third (out of 2581 schools) in this year’s ONE Campus Challenge – an intercollegiate competition designed to mobilize students in the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease – following their finish in the top 10, last season. Clark’s group received recognition for meeting recently with U.S. Rep. James McGovern; a blog about the meeting appears online at ONE Campus tumblr.
♦ On Tuesday, Nov. 29, students will host Jennie Riley, the Lesotho Program Coordinator for Partners in Health, a Boston-based health organization, who will discuss the AIDS epidemic and inequities in access to healthcare globally. The event will take place at 7 p.m. in the Jefferson Academic Building, Room 218.
♦ On Wednesday, Nov. 30, the ONE Campus Chapter will screen “The Carrier,” a 2011 Tribeca Film Festival selection and award-winning documentary by Maggie Betts, which tells the story of Mutinta, a Zambian woman who vows to prevent mother-to-child transmission of AIDS. A discussion and Q&A session will follow the screening featuring Ellen Foley, assistant professor of International Development and Social Change; and Patrick Derr, professor of philosophy; and Champo Mapulanga ’13, a Clark undergraduate who is from the same village in Zambia where the documentary was filmed. This event will take place at 7 p.m. in the Jefferson Academic Building, Room 320.
♦ On Thursday, Dec. 1, World AIDS Day, the Campus Chapter will hold their third annual World AIDS Day celebration, collaborating with AIDS Project Worcester to raise awareness of the AIDS epidemic – both locally and in the world’s poorest places – and engage their peers in writing letters to members of Congress to continue supporting programs that are successfully fighting AIDS around the world. This event will take place in Tilton Hall, 2nd floor of the Higgins University Center, at 8 p.m. Clark vocal and dance groups (Ballroom, Salsa, Clark Bars, Counterpoints and Peapod Squad) will perform.
