Connecticut River Museum internship lets Olivia Blaney ’23 combine her passions

Environmental science major Olivia Blaney ’23 spent this past summer as an intern at the Connecticut River Museum in Essex, Connecticut, where she worked alongside Allison Insall ’87, the museum’s director of education and public programs.

A native of South Hadley, Massachusetts — one of the towns the 410-mile-long river flows through in four states — Blaney has a fondness for the waterway. “It’s very special,” she says. “I’ve always been interested in how I can apply my passion for environmental science to my passion for the Connecticut River.”

During her internship, which was supported by a Goulandris Summer Internship Award, she conducted critical research on an invasive species infestation in the river.
