It’s time to burst the Clark bubble.
Sometimes students get stuck in their comfort zone, opting to stay on campus rather than explore the city and Central Massachusetts. Mike Hardej, the director of student leadership and programming, wants to ensure Clarkies have enriching experiences beyond the campus borders.
Day Trippin’ Weekends, a series of off-campus trips that immerse students in local arts, culture, and activities, was created to accomplish that goal. The program is new this semester and includes six trips around the region.
“We want to provide students an opportunity to do something fun on the weekends while also exploring Worcester and the surrounding communities,” says Hardej.
Each outing is designed to immerse students in Worcester culture while strengthening their connection with the University. Several of the trips are Worcester staples, like the Worcester Art Museum and Polar Park, but stops like Tougas Family Farm are designed to help students explore more of Central Massachusetts — without the burden of planning.
“We want to ensure that programming isn’t the sole responsibility of student clubs and organizations,” Hardej says.
The program is primarily designed for first-year students and sophomores, many of whom don’t know Worcester beyond campus borders and are building new relationships at Clark. Hardej says that the program will continue through the first six weeks of the semester and will potentially return in the spring if it’s well-received by students.
Transportation to and from the excursions is provided. The first day trip was a recent visit to the Worcester Art Museum. Up next is Polar Park for a WooSox game on Sept. 16, followed by apple picking at Tougas Family Farm on Sept. 17, New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill on Sept. 23, bowling at Bowlero on Sept. 30, and Level 99, a complex with themed escape rooms that challenge players physically and mentally, at the Natick Mall on Oct. 7. A $10 fee is required for the Bowlero and Level 99 outings.
