Clark University has named Graduate School of Geography. Professor Yuko Aoyama to the position of associate provost and dean of research, effective June 1.

Aoyama received a B.A. from International Christian University, Tokyo, an M.A. from the University of California at Los Angeles and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. She has been at Clark University since 2000, and has taught classes on economic geography, industrial geography, internet geography, and globalization. Her research interest lies in developing geographic understandings of global capitalism from institutional and comparative perspectives. She was awarded an Academic Writing Residency at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center, as well as an Abe Fellowship from the Social Science Research Council.
“I am delighted to take on this opportunity,” Aoyama said. “It is an honor to contribute to the institution by assisting faculty and students on their research activities and enhance Clark’s already strong research profile.”
Aoyama recently co-authored “The Rise of the Hybrid Domain: Collaborative Governance for Social Innovation,” which explores a new model of social innovation wherein corporations, states, and civil society organizations develop common social agendas, despite differences in their primary objectives. The book examines various cases of state-market cooperation in education, energy, health and finance in India and elsewhere.
