Fungal researchers hold regional meeting at Lasry Bioscience Center

November 6, 2012
By Clark News & Media Relations

More than 60 scientists gathered at Clark University for MassMyco, the first regional meeting of fungal biologists in New England, held at the Lasry Center for Bioscience, on Oct. 27.

Posters and oral presentations covered all aspects of fungal biology, including ecology, genomics, and discussion on all aspects of fungal biology.

The MassMyco meeting organizers included Clark University professor of biology David Hibbett, Serita Frey (University of New Hampshire), Anne Pringle (Harvard University), and Erik Hobbie, (University of New Hampshire).

“There was a remarkably diverse set of presentations, on everything from comparative genomics, to semantic vernaculars for describing mushrooms, to fungi in the tomb of King Tutankhamen,” Hibbett writes. “This meeting demonstrated that there is a rich community of fungal biologists in New England.”

Several students presented their research, including two Clark seniors: Alexis Carlson and Rachel Martin.

The meeting’s keynote address was delivered by Prof. Li-Jun Ma of the Department of Plant Soil and Insect Sciences at UMass Amherst. She is an expert in fungal comparative genomics.

Details about the program, photos, and future meetings are available at the meeting website. To learn more about Hibbett’s work, visit his lab website.
