Esteemed political scientist David A. Lake will discuss the current and continually evolving and expanding political turmoil in Libya, Egypt, Bahrain, Tunisia, Yemen, and other countries in the Middle East and North Africa, as he delivers the 2011 Harrington Public Affairs Lecture, presented by the Political Science Department at Clark University.
The lecture, titled “America’s Hegemonic Dilemma: Building Legitimate and Loyal States in an Age of Global Insurgency,” will begin at 5 p.m., Thursday, April 7, in Room 320 of the Jefferson Academic Center, Downing and Main Streets.
Lake is Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the University of California in San Diego (UCSD) and is president of the International Studies Association. He is widely regarded as one of the leading experts on international relations theory and global conflict and cooperation.
Lake has authored, co-authored or co-edited more than a dozen books, including “World Politics: Interests, Interactions, and Institutions,” “Hierarchy in International Relations,” “Governance in a Global Economy,” and “Strategic Choice in International Relations.” He has been a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Professor Lake received Ph.D. and M.A. degrees at Cornell University following his graduation in 1978 from Clark University. He is the acting dean of the Division of Social Sciences at UCSD.
“Last fall, when we invited Professor Lake to give our Harrington Lecture this April, we had no idea that his topic would become such a hot one,” said Sharon Perlman Krefetz, Andrea B. and Peter D. Klein ’64 Distinguished Professor and chair of the Political Science Department at Clark. “We are now especially eager to hear his analysis of the complex situations that have, indeed, been posing dilemma after dilemma for U.S. political leaders.”
In addition to the lecture on April 7, Lake plans to speak with students in two International Relations courses on Friday afternoon, offering an informal meeting with students who are interested in graduate programs and/or careers in IR.
